Finnish Doom-infused Death Metal outfit Marianas Rest have launched a new lyric video for Rat In The Wall, a track lifted from their latest studio album, The Bereaved, which arrived earlier this year via Noble Demon. The song features a guest vocal appearance from Okko Solanterรค (Horizon Ignited). The visual drop follows a highly successful launch for the full-length record, which secured the number three spot on Finland’s physical album charts to secure the band’s fourth consecutive top ten release, setting the stage for a busy summer festival circuit following their recent European tour.
Musically, the track relies on a mixture of powerful riffs and bleak melodic atmosphere. The band reveals that the composition process involved extensive experimentation, layering numerous melodies and instrumental textures before stripping them back to craft the final arrangement. This unorthodox approach extended to the song’s intro, which the band captured by manipulating delay pedal feedback knobs in the studio to establish a distinct, atypical opening texture.
Lyrically, the song tackles the intense emotional toll of trying to rescue someone from their own self-destruction. Vocalist Jaakko Mรคntymaa penned the track in close collaboration with Solanterรค, noting that their shared perspective made the writing process effortless. According to Mรคntymaa, the track is intended to channel the genuine, exhausting struggle of intervention, serving as a reminder that attempting to save someone is always a necessary effort, regardless of the outcome.
