Thirty-four years into their career, Finnish metal veterans Soulgrind are gearing up for the release of their tenth studio album, Ad Pulchram Mortem. Ahead of its August 14th arrival via Inverse Records, the band has shared their latest single, A Whispered Curse Upon the Gale.
Since their formation in 1992, the band has continuously morphed their sound, and this new track highlights that fluidity. A Whispered Curse Upon the Gale begins with a classic, aggressive death metal guitar riff before gradually expanding into dark, atmospheric gothic territory. The song is driven by a heavy vocal contrast, pairing the soaring clean delivery of Ms. Tanja Lilith with the deep, cavernous growls of Lord.
Thematically, the track steps away from typical war metal tropes to explore the painful overlap between grief and physical combat. The band frames love not as a source of comfort, but as a haunting, hostile force.
The band shares:
“The lyrics are about love and loss, braided together with imagery of battle. The central tension is that love, instead of offering comfort, has become a haunting presenceโ’love’s specter,’ ‘a whispered curse.’ It’s a striking inversion: here, love is part of the darkness, or at least inseparable from it. The narrator is grieving while also facing a kind of metaphorical war.”
Ad Pulchram Mortem will be officially released on August 14th. You can stream A Whispered Curse Upon the Gale today on all major digital services here.
