If you’ve seen Red White & Blue or The Living and the Dead, you already know Simon Rumley doesn’t do light entertainment. He makes films that leave you wanting to scrub yourself down with wire wool, and his latest feature isn’t breaking that streak.

Crushed lands on UK digital platforms on 5 October via GrimmVision, taking the absolute grimness of his 2012 ABCs of Death short (P is for Pressure) and blowing it up into a feature-length nightmare.

Steve Oram, a man who has made a career out of looking completely battered by life, stars as Daniel, an English vicar living in the Bangkok suburbs. His family’s quiet life gets torn apart when his 10-year-old daughter sees a sickening online animal cruelty video, triggering a spiral of events that ends with her abduction into the black-market crush-video trade.

It’s an unbelievable piece of casting. Oram plays a devout man watching his moral framework turn to ash in real-time, forced to decide whether turning the other cheek still applies when hunting for his kid in the Thai underworld.

It’s dark, deeply uncomfortable, and definitely not one for a casual Friday night in. Consider yourself warned.
