Following their explosive debut with Hienas y Buitres, Latin American extreme metal duo 85 Segundos para el Fin del Mundo has returned with their second promotional single, Hibakusha. The project unites two veteran powerhouses of the Chilean metal scene: guitarist Cristian Olivares (ex-Lefutray) and vocalist Matรญas Leonicio (Nuclear). Together, the pair continues to expand on their fiercely critical commentary regarding modern alienation and human decay.
The trackโs title pulls from the historical Japanese term for the survivors of the 1945 Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings. However, the band deftly weaponizes the concept as a sharp metaphor for the modern era, suggesting that on a planet teetering on the edge of collapse, humanity has become a collective of potential survivors exposed to ongoing nuclear, environmental, and social destruction. The bandโs very name, a direct nod to the Doomsday Clock, underscores this grim warning about how close civilization is to its own demise.
Hibakusha solidifies the duoโs raw, uncompromising approach, seamlessly blending the grit of crust punk and death ‘n’ roll with the cold weight of industrial metal. With Olivares handling the dense compositions and Leonicio pinning down the lethal lyrical delivery, the song balances a scathing condemnation of a violent system with a resilient symbol of resistance. With this latest release, 85 Segundos para el Fin del Mundo firmly establishes themselves as one of Chileโs most intense and socially conscious emerging metal acts.
