Netflix is set to premiere a serialised reimagining of the 1960 Toho classic, The Human Vapor, on July 2nd. This eight-part adaptation marks a major milestone as the first joint production between the streaming giant and Toho Studios, modernizing the sci-fi concept originally introduced by director Ishiro Honda.
The narrative centers on a national crisis triggered when an individual undergoes a violent physical transformation and erupts during a live broadcast. Behind the carnage is a fugitive who has attained a gaseous form, granting him the terrifying ability to permeate any space and remain anonymous. As he executes a series of premeditated killings, the mystery of his identity sparks a nationwide wave of panic and obsession.
This reboot leans heavily into high-end spectacle, utilizing the Academy Award-winning VFX talents of Shirogumi, the studio praised for their work on Godzilla Minus One. The production aims to elevate the standard of Japanese television with large-scale action sequences, including ambitious car chases that expand on the original film’s smaller scope.
The series features a prominent ensemble cast led by Shun Oguri and Yu Aoi, alongside Suzu Hirose, Kento Hayashi, and Yutaka Takenouchi. Shinzo Katayama handles directing duties, working from a script penned by Ryu Yong-jae and Train to Busan creator Yeon Sang-ho.
