While Ryan Murphy’s glossy prestige machine prepares to drop Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story on Netflix later this month, ITN are quietly lining up an entirely different breed of bloody chaos. Their new indie feature, Lizzie Borden: The Hatchet House, ditches the late-19th-century Massachusetts period dress to haul the urban legend straight into modern British suburbia.

Directed by Darren Goodwin, the film shifts focus to Ellie (Amy Gibbons), a sullen, alienated teenager at war with her broken family. Instead of doing what normal moody kids do, Ellie finds solace in the grisly history of Fall River’s most famous hatchet enthusiast. Naturally, fixating on a double-murderer when you’re already deeply pissed off at your parents is only going to end one way: with someone swinging sharp iron in the living room.

Joining Gibbons in the carnage are Anna Mirren, Isla Bell, and Niamh Handley-Vaughan.

It’s an aggressive pivot from the typical historical retellings we’ve seen over the years, trading costume-drama restraint for low-budget, direct-to-digital venom. There’s no official release date attached yet, but with the trailer officially unleashed, expect Lizzie Borden: The Hatchet House to land on streaming platforms sooner rather than later.
