The funeral doom project Abysmal Growls of Despair has debuted a lyric video for Prologue to Agony, providing the first look at the massive weight of the upcoming album, Torn. Set to arrive on June 5th, the new single explores grief through a nihilistic lens, utilizing a slow and decadent pace to create an atmosphere of total helplessness.
The track functions as a deliberate study in negation, moving with an irreversible momentum that mirrors the overall direction of the full-length record. Torn is described as a patient and immersive work that requires focused attention, moving away from conventional song structures to offer a deeply personal experience. The lyrics for the album were written by Jorg Puschmann, while the visual presentation was handled by artist Patrick Corcoran.
Led by the musician Hangsvart since 2013, Abysmal Growls of Despair integrates ritualistic dark ambient and drone into a funeral doom foundation. The project draws inspiration from genre stalwarts like Sunn O))), Funeral Moth, and Ataraxie, focusing on themes of ancient spirituality and altered mental states.
The emotional depth of the project is inextricably linked to the personal experiences of Hangsvart, who has been transparent about how his lifelong struggle with schizophrenia influences his creative process. This openness provides the project with its stark authenticity, defining the oppressive and honest nature of the music.
