Romanian post-black metal project Pâenil Era have unveiled a gripping lyric video for their new single, The Scene. The track serves as the first look into the band’s upcoming full-length album, A Wilting Fountain, which is scheduled to drop on September 9th, via Neuronoir. Released on CD, cassette, and all major streaming platforms, the single marks a powerful return for the Timișoara-based outfit, whose moniker acts as an anagram for ‘Bad Funnel’, a symbolic, broken filter that channels dark subconscious thoughts into musical form.
Lyrically, The Scene acts as a deep dive into a fractured, predatory mindset where self-alienation twists into imaginary persecution, moral posturing, and a bitter desire for revenge. The song meticulously tracks how a disconnection from oneself fuels broader social division and victimization, ultimately creating a decadent social landscape where everyone feels hunted and actively craves violence.
The single establishes the overarching narrative structure of A Wilting Fountain, a five-track record that bridges the earthly, the liminal, and the spiritual by utilizing an old Romanian carol as its opening incantation. Pâenil Era sidestep predictable genre patterns, pushing beyond blast-beat-heavy black metal into dense, shifting post-black atmospheres that mirror the internal psychological descent of the lyrics. It offers a deeply unsettling glimpse into an album centered entirely around raw self-confrontation.
