The cycle of family trauma takes a terrifying, supernatural turn in The Voices of Our Mother, a new Canadian horror feature set to arrive on Shudder this summer. Starring genre veteran Sheila McCarthy (Anything for Jackson), the film explores how buried secrets can manifest as a literal, predatory evil.โ
The story begins with the passing of the family matriarch at the age of 95. In the wake of the funeral, her daughter, Harriet Scaflen, suffers a sudden and inexplicable medical crisis. This emergency forces Harrietโs four estranged children to return to their ancestral home to provide care. However, the reunion quickly sours as old grudges and hidden shames come to light. The siblings soon discover that Harrietโs condition isn’t biological, itโs a malevolent force that has awakened within her, one that requires the suffering of her own kin to ensure its survival.โ
The project is the latest creative effort from writer, director, and actor Mark OโBrien (Ready or Not, Arrival), who also takes on a supporting role in the film. The cast is rounded out by a strong cast of Canadian talent, including:โ
- Georgina Reilly (Pontypool)โ
- Carolina Bartczak (X-Men: Apocalypse)โ
- Alex Ozerov-Meyer (Slasher)โ
- Shawn Doyle (The Expanse)โ
- Anna Ferguson (Heartland)โ
Produced by the team behind the acclaimed Anything for Jackson, the film promises a claustrophobic and emotionally charged descent into a revenge-fueled haunting.
The Voices of Our Mother begins streaming on Shudder on June 19th.
