If you want to understand second-wave black metal, you don’t start with the tabloid nonsense, the church burnings, or the murder trials. You start with four blokes in Norway recording an album in 1991 that would help create the most glorious middle-finger U-turn in heavy metal history. To understand why A Blaze in the Northern…

Überchriist don’t mess about with trivialities like intro tracks. There is no self-indulgent noodling or atmospheric mood setting at the start of Dæmonic Apotheosis. Überchriist just get straight to the fucking point and start slapping you around like a red-headed stepchild, with the opening track, Anti-Phoenix Descent. It’s refreshing. For far too long, black metal…

Before I get into this review, I want to tell you a story. A couple of months ago I was at the end of it all, from a writing perspective. I wasn’t making any money, I was burnt out, and felt that I was just banging the same drum. Music news. Music reviews. Music news.…

I like this record. A lot. It completely refuses to be pigeonholed, and it’s different from anything else I can think of off the top of my head. The songs were completed in 2024, but lineup changes that same year pushed back both the production process and the album’s eventual release. Additional session musicians were…

A Secret Revealed have unveiled Disheartened, the first single from their upcoming fourth full-length, The Ruin I Summoned Forth, with Der Weg einer Freiheit vocalist Nikita Kamprad joining the Würzburg post-metal quintet on the track. Due out on October 16 through Lifeforce Records, the eight-track album continues the band’s heavy and atmospheric approach while bringing…

Listening to an album sung entirely in a band’s native tongue is a unique experience. After all, a lot of what I get from music is based as much on the words I am hearing as the sounds themselves. Now, when that involves black metal, as a lot of you know, without a lyric sheet…
